The silver cloud’s dark lining

Over many centuries, Ladakhis have adapted to a way of living that suits the dry climate.
On the 6th day of August 2010, a devastating cloudburst hit Leh town and other parts of Ladakh. A little fewer than 200 have been declared dead, over 400 are severely injured and almost the same numbers are still missing. The most affected area near Leh is Choglamsar, where most of the village is said to have been wiped away. It is said that parts of Choglamsar are buried under a pile of mud 20 feet high. The destruction is so immeasurable that it may take several months if not years, for the region to get back on its feet.

The dreaded seven months of frozen-winter are soon approaching and almost every family in Leh that managed to survive the flash floods is now homeless. With a night time temperature of -10 to -15 degrees Celsius, there is no way that they can survive more than a night without shelter. There are many organizations that are gathering support to Leh-Ladakh at this time.

On twitter there are various organizations that are seeking flood-relief support, like @OxfamIndia and @stc_india. While on Facebook there are support groups like Help Ladakh. Another article that caught my attention was the Public Appeal by Save the Children India.

If you’ve seen it happen, I would love to hear you’re first hand experience of the disaster. Blog about this disaster and mail it to me and I could feature your post. If you would like to lend your support, do let us know in your comments and we can guide you towards a suitable organization that would help you help the unfortunate residents of India’s once tranquil haven.
