Somebody pinch me.

About last Tuesday, if I remember correctly, we emerged into the world, bawling and blinking and wetting our nappies and making a hell of a racket – and here we are already, singing Happy birthday to ourselves. Tempus does fugit, no? I expect it’s true what they say: times flies when you’re having fun, and though the slaves under my whip might object, I at least, have been having a whale of a time. Wildlife specials, island specials, top 10 lists, secret lists and more than a couple of dreams fulfilled. Not bad. More than anything else, it’s time for a deep breath, a slightly tipsy but mile-wide smile, and a very, very big thank you to all our readers, contributors, well-wishers, fans, critics and general offerers of advice: it wouldn’t have been possible without you. The magazine is yours – we’re just the bakers, and watching you dig in has been an absolute pleasure. And, while we were digging out our shiny party hats,we decided to make the cake a bit of a whopper, only instead of chocolate bits and mousse and praline and kiwi fruit and other glutinous goodies, we’ve stuffed it with the most intriguing summer destinations we could find. Mexico, so mad and colourful and subtle and tasty, red-hot Andalusia, with its stirring backbeat of flamenco. Israel, so much easier to explore (and with so much more to see) than you’d think. Arunachal, so mind-blowingly beautiful that the people have to pretend it’s all completely unremarkable, just so their brains don’t explode when they look out their windows. And Belize and Cape Town, so stupefyingly fascinating, we’re wondering why we hadn’t gone there before... Go enjoy your slice of cake – we’re going to have ours with a glass of bubbly…
